Second line at VMMP shut down until March

In early December, the second line of hydrotransport at the processing subdivision of Vilnohirsk Mining and Metallurgical Plant, PJSC UMCC, was fully shut down; the water from the 'pockets' was drained and suspension was performed. The plant's Chief Engineer Oleksandr Prokopenko comments: “There were a number of factors that contributed to the decision to temporarily shut down the second line of hydrotransport. At the moment, there is no ore for mining at the Southern stretch of the open pit mine No. 7 – we are only performing stripping operations. There will be ore in February. In order to maintain the operation of the line, ore sands from the Northern stretch must be transported there, which is completely inexpedient. To pump pulp at the temperatures below minus 10 degrees is technological impossible – we would have had to pump water without a stop to avoid freezing of the pipe, otherwise we would not have been able to start working even in April. Exploitation expenses for water pumping during low temperatures amount to 5 MWtt per hour, which if transferred into money would be a very high sum.
That is why a decision was made that we will continue working on the first line of hydrotransport and mine ore on at the Northern stretch in order to avoid unnecessary expenses and optimize the rational use of funds.
The second line is shut down for the winter period and, if necessary, we can put it back into the operation mode and reach full capacity within 24 hours.”
