Braemar ACM Shipbroking believes that the growing demand for handysize vessels, which are usually used to transport mineral sands, could lead to an increase of freight rates. The growing trend from larger volume raw materials resources, such as iron ore, to insignificant, such as base metals, will lead to an increase of demand for medium and low range vessels. Handysize vessels remain highly demanded despite that the shipping industry is currently oversaturated in general.
Furthermore, within the framework of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM), which will take force September 8, 2017, there will be a requirement that the ships are equipped with ship cleaning systems to prevent the spread of invasive species that could harm local ecosystems.
